You may be asking yourself, what exactly is an impregnating sealer? The answer is simple. They’re a safe and recommended way to protect your stone from becoming stained by liquid and oil substances. These sealers sit below the stones surface, creating clear and solid partial deposits within the stones pores. The invisible coat of resin that is created will then prevent any other substance from being absorbed into your stone and creating a stain.
When it comes to impregnating sealers, there are many to choose from. Depending on what sealer you choose, they may repel water and oil or resist water or oil. There is a difference. Hydrophobic impregnating sealers only protect against liquid substances like coffee, tea, and soda. These sealers usually will not protect your stone from oils such as grease and cooking oils. To protect against oils, you will need to select an Oilophobic sealer. All Oilophobic sealers will provide protection from oils and liquids, where hydrophobic sealers might not protect your stone from oils. The difference between resisting and repelling is simple. Sealers that resist oil or water will slow down the rate of absorption into the stone, giving you additional time to clean up the spill. Sealers that repel oil and water will prevent substances from entering the stone at all.
When applying any sealer to your stone it’s best to test the sealer on a small area that is out of site in order to ensure that it will not alter the color or shine of your stone. These sealers are easy to apply and do not require you to strip any existing sealers from your stone. Depending on the location of your stone, its use, and porosity, you may need to add a second coat. It’s recommended that you reseal your stone ever 3 -5 years for maximum protection, but some sealers will provide protection for more than 10 years.
